The washing machine drains the water using a pressure switch that detects how full the drum is. If the drain does not start, the self-diagnosis system displays Samsung washer error code SC (5C), 5E, or nd. Older models (manufactured before 2007) have E2.
SC error: description
The SC error does not exist. Many people confuse the number “5” with the English “S,” so they take 5C for the SC error code. The meaning does not change from this: both combinations of symbols indicate a failure in the drain system. Moreover, problems can manifest themselves in different ways:
- The washing machine interrupts the program and stands full of water;
- Water leaves too slowly and not completely;
- The drum is empty, but the display still shows an SC error (5C).
In the first two cases, the problem may turn out to be external – the pipes’ clogging cannot be ruled out. Disconnect the end of the hose, place it in a large container and start draining. If the water is being pumped out, the drain or the siphon under the sink must be cleaned.
It is also possible that there is a failure in the electronic controller, which incorrectly transmits/sends signals. Turn off the machine for 10-15 minutes, and then try repeating the wash cycle.
Causes of Error SC
If restarting the electronic equipment did not help, you need to find out what kind of malfunction causes Samsung washer error code SC (5C). Just remember to forcibly drain the water from the drum and remove the laundry.
1. Clogged pump filter
Is the pump running but not pumping? Check the drain filter first. Please open the door in the lower right corner (on the front wall) and unscrew the plug with the pump filter by turning it counterclockwise.
Small items like buttons, buttons, and coins do not interfere with draining too much. Error code SC (5C) is caused only by large obstacles: accumulations of lint, clothing pieces, etc. Remove them, wash the filter and reinstall.
2. Problems with the drain hose
Make sure the hose:
- not frozen or clogged;
- located correctly, depending on the type of its connection;
- smooth, without damage or kinks;
- no longer than 4 meters.
The most common reason for stagnant water in a washing machine is an incorrect installation of the drain hose. Attach it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. At the same time, check if there is anything extra inside. Obstacles can be removed under the pressure of air, liquid, or pushed with something, manually.
3. Foreign objects in the pipe
Sometimes a blockage forms in the drain pipe. In this case, the technician does not pump out the water, and the SC error (5C) appears on display. Make sure no debris gets inside the connection between the pump and the tank. If the passage is clogged, it must be unclogged.
4. Blockage in the pump
Continuous/intermittent pump noise may occur when small objects such as coins, nails, screws, hair clips, or rubber bands get stuck. A quiet hum means that the node is working, but it is jammed. Remove the filter, turn on drain mode and watch the impeller turn. Check the pump outlet chamber and under the impeller for hidden obstructions that need to be removed. Often this step is carried out immediately when inspecting the pump filter.
5. Loose wire connection
It is quite another matter if the pump does not make sounds. In this case, the SC error code (5C) may be associated with the electrical circuit’s open contacts. Inspect the wires from the drain pump to the control module. They may have come off and need to be fixed. This often happens after transporting or moving the washing machine.
Another likely cause of a malfunction is damaged wiring. Act according to the situation:
- if the defects are minor, restore the open circuit by twisting;
- if everything is serious, completely replace the loop.
6. Breakdown of the pump
When the washing machine does not spin, does not drain the water, and shows the error code SC (5C), in 90% of cases, a faulty pumping system is to blame. But don’t think that a broken pump must be silent. The rotor can rotate at normal speed but not move the impeller. Or vice versa, make few revolutions due to slippage on the shaft, which is why the Samsung washer error code SC is displayed during the drain.
How to check the pump?
- Lay the washing machine on its side to access the contacts
- Remove the control panel and front cover
- Use a multimeter to check the continuity of the electrical circuit at the terminals. Standard pump windings typically have a resistance of about 165 ohms. But in different models of washing machines, the resistance of the pump may be different
- If everything is in order and the SC (5C) error continues to appear, call a specialist who will conduct a detailed examination.

7. Blocking of the pressure switch or its malfunction
When such a blockage occurs, the washing machine signals stagnant water by displaying the SC error code (5C). Draining the washing machine works fine, but due to a blockage, the pressure system receives incorrect signals and transmits them to the control board. The car “thinks” that it is still full, so it does not start spinning rapidly.
How to clean the pressure switch:
- disconnect the equipment from the mains;
- remove the panel;
- unscrew the rubber tube from the pressure switch;
- blow it gently.
If the drum is empty and the air does not pass, then dirt or limescale has accumulated somewhere.
Sometimes the SC (5C) error is associated with a breakdown of the water level sensor. But there is a different error code for this sensor, for example such Samsung washer error code 1E
8. Malfunction of the control module
If the microcircuit is out of order, it does not send signals to the pump motor. This prevents the pump from pumping out water. The board should be repaired or completely replaced. One of the most expensive parts of a washing machine. It is often better to replace it than to repair it. But it all depends on the repairman.
